As the fires rage and smokes fills the air our eyes can become irritated and sore. Herbal tea makes an excellent eye wash. Most handy is to use an eye cup, available at most drug stores and some herb shops and natural food stores. Fill the eye cup with well strained herbal tea, pull down your lower lid, suction the cup against your face, lean back , blink and rinse. Some tea of course will come cascading down your face! Rinse your eyes two to three times a day. In lieu of an eyecup you can put drops in your eyes or make a poultice of the herbs or even more simply use a tea bag.
Fennel seeds are ripe and plump on the plant right now and are one of my favorite eye wash herbs. Grind 2 teaspoons of fennel seeds in a mortar and pestle until well bruised and aromatic. Place the fennel in a jar and pour over 250 ml of hot water. Let steep 30 minutes or more, strain through a coffee filter and apply. Remaining liquid will stay good in the fridge for 2 days.
Other helpful eye wash herbs are chickweed, chamomile and eyebright (of course!).
